OSHAWA, ON – The Oshawa FireWolves of the National Lacrosse League (NLL) today announced FireWolves forward Alex Simmons as the Director of the Junior FireWolves Training Academy and School Program. Along with scoring big goals at the Tribute Communities Centre, Simmons will now also spearhead the FireWolves efforts to grow the game of lacrosse in the Durham Region.
Simmons will lead the Junior FireWolves Training Academy which will conduct camps and clinics to provide lacrosse training for local players. He will also oversee the FireWolves School Program which gives students the opportunity to learn the basic skills of lacrosse and connect with professional lacrosse players.
“We have a great opportunity to make an impact in Durham Region, and I’m excited to help build those relationships with local families, schools, and the lacrosse community,” said Simmons. “I think there’s so much potential here, and I’m really looking forward to being a part of growing the game in an area that already has such a rich lacrosse history.”
Simmons is from Smithville, ON and is going into his fourth season as a player for the FireWolves organization. He was named the 2023-2024 NLL Rookie of the Year and was instrumental in the FireWolves run to the 2024 NLL Finals. He has been the FireWolves leading scorer all three seasons he has been on the team and most recently finished the 2025-2026 season with a career high of 109 points (41 goals and 68 assists), which was sixth in the NLL. Simmons played collegiately at the University of Denver and Syracuse University. He has represented Team Canada on the international stage and most recently helped lead them to win the 2026 Pan-Am Men’s Lacrosse Championship this past August.
Providing opportunities to new and experienced lacrosse players will be the primary goal as Simmons steps into this new role with the organization. The FireWolves visited 39 schools during their Inaugural Season and look forward to bringing more opportunities to schools in the area.
“We want kids who have never played before to feel like they can come out, pick up a stick, and give it a try,” said Simmons. “At the same time, we want to provide opportunities for kids who already love the game to continue developing their skills.”
Simmons knows the impact a professional athlete can have and is excited to provide opportunities for local kids to learn from the pros.
“For a young lacrosse player, having the opportunity to be on the floor with a professional player, ask questions, and learn directly from them can be a really special experience,” said Simmons. “We want every kid to leave the camp or clinic excited to come back.”
