LOCAL SUPER HEROES MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN DURHAM REGION

OSHAWA, ON– The word ‘hero’ can be used in many different aspects: someone saving you from a traumatic event, preventing harm behind the scenes, a person that you look up to, or even an individual making a difference in their community uniquely.

The Oshawa FireWolves players are heroes in their own regard. They teach young players the ways of the game and coach them through camps, training sessions, and online videos.

Outside the arena, though, multiple heroes are in their neighbourhoods every day, providing quality products and services to help improve people’s daily lives. The Oshawa FireWolves are proud and honoured to be surrounded by such a variety of people who make a difference each and everyday that better society. Today we honour: Shaun Maddock, Fran Steyn, Kristy Cowie, Rich Luchford, and all those who are bettering our community.

Shaun Maddock has been a consultant at Grandview Kids School for years and has been a great beneficiary in helping families make the right choice for their futures. Maddock has been desired by his peers as a superhero for assisting in everyday schedules for the kids, and goes above and beyond for them. He has been a voice and person of comfort for families that are in the decision making progress at Grandview.

From a Grandview consultant to a caterer in Fran Steyn, who has been helping her community for years by providing free soup lunches to people in need. She is someone who has been the beating heart of her area for a while and always lends a hand to any community group in need in whatever way she can.

First responders are people who get labeled as heroes every day, but for Kristy Cowie, she is one. Cowie has been a paramedic with Toronto Paramedic Services for the past 11 years and gets into her ambulance each and every shift with a smile on her face while delivering expert patient care to citizens in need in the city. She has also become a field training officer for TPS, which has allowed her to pass on her knowledge and expertise to the paramedics of tomorrow. Paramedic students complete their ride-along portion of their schooling with Cowie, and she trains them in the field. Outside of saving lives on the streets of Toronto, she’s a mother to two children, Addy (4) and Finn (6), on her off days.

Not all heroes save lives or provide food; some do it out of the kindness of their hearts. Rich Luchford is someone who has done that for years across the Durham Region. His company, UndercoverDachshund, has had a long-lasting impact by spreading kindness, positivity, and real support to those who need it most. Through surprise giveaways, pop-up events, school visits, and ongoing acts of generosity, he not only creates smiles—but actively helps families in need. Luchford’s mission has been the backbone of the company, making sure no one feels forgotten, and he has achieved that and continues to do so. With the help of his family, he has created a children’s book titled “The Adventures of Mia & Me” that promotes kindness and compassion, helping inspire the next generation. What truly sets UndercoverDachshund apart is that everything is done from the heart. There is no expectation—just a genuine desire to lift others. His impact goes far beyond a moment; he is creating a movement of kindness that continues to grow throughout the community.

The FireWolves are proud to honour these people on the jumbotron who show their heroic talents on Marvel Superhero Night on Saturday, March 28 against the Rochester Knighthawks. Fans can show off their coolest superhero costumes by purchasing their tickets here. Fans can also own a FireWolves Marvel Jersey through our online auction found here!
